Any vehicle will not run without the essential tool which is the car battery. They have a special role for the cars to operate. They provide extra power to the ignition; they start the engine of the vehicle and provide electricity to the lighting and some car accessories. The electrical system of vehicles is dependent on the power the car delivers when the charging system is not working. However, there are things to be considered in buying car batteries. They are the CCA or the cold cranking amps, group size and the reserve capacity of the battery.
Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)
This is the ability of the vehicle to start during the cold weather. The CCA rating should meet or exceed the car’s oEM (original equipment manufacturer). Don’t buy car batteries that are below the required CCA rating of your car. If you are living in countries where the weather is always cold, in buying car batteries, go for the batteries with the longest reserve capacity. Batteries with high CCA rating are good for starting cars with chilled and sluggish car engine which requires lots of power to start it up.
Reserve Capacity
This is the capacity of the car to run on the battery alone should the alternator fail. Full charged battery normally runs at 25 amps, if the battery’s voltage is lower than 10.5 amps, this is the time for you to change your battery. The reserve capacity of batteries will ensure that you can still continue to drive should the charging system of the car fails, it will drive you to safety and steer clear from being stuck on the road.
Group Size
Group size will determine the outside dimension and the placement of the terminals on the battery. You have to follow the car’s manufacturer recommendation in buying car batteries. The most common size are 75 for General Motor vehicles, 65 compatible with large cars from Ford, Mercury and Lincoln, 34 fits the size for all Chrysler models and size 32 just right for new models of Honda, Toyota and Nissan.
Batteries are divided into two categories, the maintenance free that have longer operational life, longer shelf life and have faster recharging time. The second category is the low maintenance battery which is perfect for cars that are driven in hot climates. This category is not sealed therefore; water can be refilled when necessary.
